When Kari is decorating a house, rugs are one of the most important elements for tying a room together. They anchor your furniture, add color or texture, and set the mood for the room. Truly, short of remodeling your house, changing or adding a rug will make the biggest change in a room.
For our Friday Five this week, we are sharing some of my favorite ways to use rugs!
1.) Anchor the furniture in your living room
As the trend for large, open floorplans has continued to grow in popularity, adding a rug to anchor your furniture has become even more important. Without it, the seating area often ends up looking like the furniture is floating in the vast space. Here’s an example of how a big rug makes a big difference:

2. Spruce up your outdoor patio
Let’s be honest, here in Dalhart, we need more than little help making our outdoor spaces beautiful. A fun, colorful rug is an easy way to add some personality to your patio, making it a space you love to entertain in or just enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning!
Kari’s Tip: Geometric prints are really trendy! A less expensive indoor/outdoor rug is a great place to incorporate the trend.
3. Go seasonal with a small rug in your laundry room, bathroom, or kitchen
Smaller rugs usually run under $100 – making them a great accessory when decorating for the seasons. It’s an unexpected touch that makes a big impact.
For example, use the lighter in Spring and then switch it out for a darker, richer rug for the Fall.
4. Set the tone in your formal dining room
Often, formal dining rooms are one of the first rooms you see when you walk in a house, making them so important to stage and set the mood for the rest of the house. When choosing a rug for your dining room, size is key! Make sure that it is large enough that your chairs will stay on the rug when they are pulled out from under the table. This helps the room seem a little more grand.

Kari’s Tip: This kind of subtle pattern and tone-on-tone coloring is extremely popular right now!
5. Add some personality to your kitchen
If you’re like me, sometimes I absolutely fall in love with the colors and pattern of rug that just doesn’t go in my house.
Kari’s Tip: Get it in a smaller size and use it at your kitchen sink!
It’ll give you something to look forward to when you’re on your way to do dishes, while also adding a little extra comfort under your feet.
